Dear Bill. I love that you’re doing this exploration of MG! I, like many of your readers I’m sure, have long been a fan of her stories. I’m also thrilled by the reference to KM today. We come (came) from the same city and went to the same school, she was just a little bit ahead of me, of course! In the late 70’s, early 80’s, I gave readings from her stories at various locations around the Lower Mainland including the R&R bookstore on 4th Ave. Do you remember it?

Thanks, Jenny! I really had to think about KM -- who's KM? Then I got it. Mansfield is mentioned right at the beginning of The Moslem Wife. I wish I'd heard you read her stories - and I think I remember that store, though I've forgotten so much, it's actually shocking how much is gone. Was that Renee Rodin's place? That would make sense, R & R. Hope you're doing very well, thanks for the kind words, wishing you all good things!

Thanks, Kim, that means a lot, truly. They're fun for me to write, would benefit from editing and proof reading and so on, but they're meant to be free-fall and circular. Self-indulgent? maybe a little! I so appreciate that you've taken the time to read and to be in touch and hope you're writing up a storm.

I met MG when she was Writer in Rez at U of T, where I briefly taught (thinking, naively, that the academy would welcome me with open arms. I was a small female Jewish poet , so it crossed its tweedy arms across its tweedy chest and said no). Anyway, all I remember from the luncheon I was invited to share with her and at which I was too in awe to say a word, was her pronouncing acerbically that she couldn't bear to go to the cinema in North America because everyone was vulgarly crunching popcorn, which ruined the experience. As someone who had always, until then, indulged in that very vice, I felt even more abashed. Have to say that as I got older, the crunching really started to bother me as well.
