a classic 3 in the morning error, where "compline" appears as "comping," the kind of mistake that could only be made by someone who has too often been comped in his life. The comp before the storm.

My friend Peggy Thompson and I flew to Montreal in 2012 ( I think that was the year) to see Patti Smith and Neil Young. We wrote a piece about it in Geist Mag. One of the highlights, and there were really no low lights, was our short interview with one of Neil’s longest serving roadies.

He remarked,” Life in your sixties is like being in the Sixties- you just don’t give a fuck.” Thanks again for the early mornings and dedication to this project. You inspired me to set up my own Substack. Densemilt.Substack.com

Dennis! Thanks so much. I think that's true, about the 60's. Well. More or less. Look forward to seeing your substack, thanks for the kind words and for coming along on this ride. Cheers, mate.

Every diary entry reads like a short story. In perfect time - visually & narratively.

Sigh . . .

The Sixties remind me so much of today. As a teen, I loved them; I remember the three main civil rights movements, the anti-war protests, the hippie dropouts, and of course the anti-war protests. I was living in Switzerland 68/69. The protests!

The newsreel of the student riots in France at the bottom of your entry was a rare treat -- and what a fabulously dramatic background score. I'd forgotten that de Gaulle briefly fled France. The left always forgets, though, that left violence fuels the right, as it did with the election of Nixon in the States, the Gaullists having their biggest electoral triumph in response to the unrest, and the resurgence of the Republicans in 2020 after the BLM protests, which had been expected to be a blowout for the Democrats but ended with a bare win in the House and a tie in the Senate.

I'm also mindful of how the world seemed on the brink of collapse. And how while the young like me were thrilled by the idea of big change (McGovern in '72) the adults, like the me of today, were much less sanguine. (More parallels: Soviets entering Prague like the entry into Ukraine; Black Panthers instead of BLM; university administrator offices taken over, even here. And just as today, adults saying we didn't know anything about suffering.)

Plus ça change.
